Milli Vanilli was a pop and dance music project formed by Frank Farian in Germany in 1988, fronted by Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. The group's debut album achieved high sales internationally which earned them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1990. The act sold over 30 million singles, 14 million albums and became one of the most popular pop acts in the late 80s and early 90s. However, their success turned to infamy when their Grammy was revoked after it was revealed that the actual vocals on the record were not the voices of Morvan and Pilatus. Farian chose to feature vocals by Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, and twin sisters Jodie and Linda Rocco; however, he felt that those singers lacked a marketable image. Thus, Farian recruited Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, two younger and more photogenic model/dancers he found in a Berlin dance club, to front the act. The name "Milli Vanilli" was taken from a local advertising slogan in Turkey[citation needed]. Milli Vanilli's debut album All Or Nothing, was released in Europe in mid 1988, with Rob and Fab at the helm and nary to mention of the actual singers. The success of the record caught the attention of Arista Records, who signed the duo, remixed some of the tracks, added others, renamed it Girl You Know It's True for the release of the American market in early 1989. The U.S. version of the album lead things off with the single the title track which peaked at number 2 on the Hot 100 in April of that year and was certified platinum (the song was a cover version of a Numarx track published in 1987 on the US Bluebird label). Even greater commercial success followed, as the pair's next three singles "Baby Don't Forget My Number", "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" and "Blame It On The Rain" all hit number 1. A fifth and final single "All or Nothing", also made the Top 5 in the beginning of 1990. Milli Vanilli's meteoric rise to pop music superstardom culminated with 3 American Music Awards in 1990. This is a video I found of the Gipsy Kings singing Hotel California, their Spanish/gipsy version of it.It looks like it was cut from the US tour dvd from 1991,...The song was used in The Big Lebowski but for some reason a lot of people think it was produced for that movie, there is about 9-10 years difference in when they sang the song in Californis for their first concert in Hollywood in 1990,anyway,the song is long 5:45,so I had to do a little editing of a minute to get it to my limit of space of 100mb,it is still good.

Some primarily U-Bahn (underground railway / subway) related views filmed in Berlin in April 1990, which was after the wall had been opened but when the city was still divided. 1) Alexanderplatz was the focal point for the Eastern part of Berlin, and here we see some large & small profile U-Bahn trains (note the 'door closing' lights and bells) plus the main Centrum department store and a shop selling 'Western' products for people with 'hard' currency (ie: £, $, DM, etc). Not filmed (to avoid possible arrest) were signs inside Centrum in German, French, English and Russian saying that many of the goods on display could only be sold to people with Berlin Residency Cards (ie: people from the part of Berlin in the former DDR / GDR). There is also a ride inside a small profile U-Bahn train. 2) Wittenbergplatz was part of the focal point for the Western part of Berlin, and here we see a gift from London Transport, some small profile U-Bahn trains (note the lack of any type of 'door closing' alarms) plus some internal & external views of the restored station booking hall and the nearby large KaDeWe department store. 3) A ride through some closed stations inside a large profile U-Bahn train on line U8. After the building of the wall in 1961 the U8 only carried West Berliners, linking suburbs to the north and the south of the city via Alexanderplatz but with the stations in the Eastern controlled part of Berlin being sealed so that no-one could enter / leave them and armed guards on the station platforms to kill anyone who tried to board a passing train. At the time of filming one station (Rosenthaler Platz) had already been reopened, but the other 5 (on U8) remained closed, with the platforms dimly lit, and trains travelling through without stopping. 4) A photograph taken in December 1989 of a typical U-Bahn station in East Berlin which because the trains which served it ran through to West Berlin was closed.
