Live performance from 1987 in honour of 750 years Berlin. Part 10 (last part) http://shirleybassey.wordpress.com/ About the dress Dame Shirley is wearing for this performance (from Ian): This gown was designed by Sara Perceval around 1983, Sara did all of the lace chiffon gowns for DSB in the 90's. We call it the Cockeral Gown for obvious reasons. The gown was worn at Blazers in London in 1984, on British tv in 1987 and in Berlin in 1987 and several other occasions in the late 80's. It was sadly destroyed in a fire in the early 90's! This Is My Life Music written by B. Canfora, Original Italian words by A. Amurri, English lyrics by Norman Newell. This Is My Life recorded: January 14, 1968 released: UK: Mar '68 on United Artists sgl UP 1207 US: Sep '68 on United Artists sgl UA 50459 Released 1968 on a single and on the album This Is My Life (La Vita). Norman Newell wrote the English lyrics for Shirley Bassey from the Italian song La Vita. She sings this song with so much emotion, it has become a personal anthem. With "I Am What I Am" she sings this song at the end of almost every concert. It is therefore available on many live recordings and on many collections and videos. Live available for example on The Birthday Concert. Because there are also many different studio versions, here is a list: The 1968 English/Italian version La Vita. The 1968 English album version with a length of 3:07, that is on most of the collections. 1978: 7" single (UP 36502, Holland 1979: UA 5C 006-82651) "disco" version remixed by Hank Cicalo without the slow intro and verse one, but verse two twice - length 3:40. (B-side: The Magic Is You.) This version is also referred to as the "European Single Version". Though on the collection Original Gold according to the cover should be this version on the CD, it indeed contains the 1968 album version. 1979: a 12" European maxi-single (UA K 052 Z 82651) with the slow intro and verse one and stretched at the end which makes it very long: 6:51. (B-side: The Magic Is You.) A 12" U.S. maxi-single (but 33 rpm) from 1979 (UA D6007D and UA-P5007-D) with alternate vocals by Shirley re-recorded and re-mixed by Rick Gianatos. It does not include the slow intro but indeed verse 1 in disco beat - time: 6:17 (intro 0:37). (B-side: Copacabana (At The Copa)) See Also Rick Gianatos working together with Shirley Bassey. 1979: 12" "disco" maxi-single from United Artist (EMI Electrola 1 C 052-82 734 YZ, 45rpm, length 6:08) with "Copacabana (At The Copa)" on the B-side. Despite of the 9 seconds difference noted to the version above, these two versions seem to be the same. The "disco" versions were very successful. In the Netherlands for example this maxi was her biggest hit ever, reaching No. 4 in the charts. I have a 45rpm single with another version "re-recorded and mixed by Rick Gianatos, remixed from the United Artists LP The Magic Is You", length: 4:25 (intro 0:19). The intro is different and shorter than on the other Rick Gianatos version and at the end it is fading down during an instrumental part, but the rest seems to be the same. A really different version re-mixed by Meco Monardo & Tony Bongiovi has been released in 1979 by United Artists USA on UA-D6001-D (UAST-20388), length 6:15. This version has also been released on a CD-maxi-single "This Is My Life - the lost disco mixes". For more information on Meco and Tony read Mecoman or The Official MECO Fan Page. Another new "disco" version was released 1978 on the album The Magic Is You on CD and LP and on a single with a length of 4:53 (sometimes 4:51). This version is available on CD for example on the 1992 collection The Magic Is You. Lyrics This is my life: Funny how a lonely day, can make a person say: What good is my life Funny how a breaking heart, can make me start to say: What good is my life Funny how I often seem, to think I'll find another dream (or to think I'll never find a dream) In my life Till I look around and see, this great big world is part of me And my life This is my life Today, tomorrow, love will come and find me But that's the way that I was born to be This is me This is me This is my life And I don't give a damn for lost emotions I've such a lot of love I've got to give Let me live Let me live Sometime when I feel afraid, I think of what a mess I've made of my life Crying over my mistakes, forgetting all the breaks I've had In my life I was put on earth to be, a part of this great world is me And my life Guess I'll just have to score, and count the things I'm grateful for In my life This Is my life Today, tomorrow, love will come and find me But that's the way that I was born to be This is me This is me This is my life And I don't give a damn for lost emotions I've such a lot of love I've got to give Let me live Let me live This is my life This is my life

She is wearing a fabulous new gown after selling most of her gowns for charity at Christies. Shirley jokingly referred to this gown as 'The Canary'. The Faenol Festival (Welsh: Gŵyl y Faenol) is a music festival organised by Welsh singer Bryn Terfel and held annually on the Faenol Estate (Welsh: Y Faenol), near Y Felinheli in Gwynedd, north Wales. The festival was launched in 2000 and traditionally takes place on August Bank Holiday weekend. It includes both classical and Welsh popular music. In 2006 the four day festival was attended by over 35,000 people, a record figure for the event. Part 7. (last part) Bryn Terfel Jones was born in Pantglas, North Wales, the son of a farmer (he knew of another Welsh baritone named Delme Bryn-Jones, so Terfel chose Bryn Terfel as his professional name). Terfel had an interest in and talent for music from a very young age. A family friend taught him how to sing, starting with traditional Welsh songs. After winning numerous competitions for his singing, Terfel moved to London in 1984 and entered the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which he graduated in 1989, winning the Gold Medal. He came in second behind Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the Cardiff BBC Singer of the World Competition the same year, though won the Lieder Prize. Personal life: He is married to his childhood sweetheart, Leslie; the couple have three children: Tomos, Morgan, and Deio Sion. In September 2007, Terfel withdrew to severe criticism from Covent Garden's Ring Cycle when his six-year-old son Deio required several operations on his broken finger.[9] The family live in Bontnewydd, near Caernarfon, Gwynedd. Terfel was a leading petitioner in the creation of Bontnewydd railway station on the rebuilt Welsh Highland Railway, and in part sponsored its construction. Honours and Awards: Terfel has been awarded the highest honour in Wales when he was made an honorary member of the Gorsedd of Bards (white Druid robes). Created in 1792 as celebration of Welsh heritage, Gorsedd inductees are considered to have contributed zelously to Welsh culture. In 2003, Terfel became a Commander of the British Empire, receiving the honour from the Prince of Wales. In 2006 he became the second recipient of the Queen's Medal for Music (the previous recipient was conductor Sir Charles Mackerras). Terfel is also President of the Welsh homelessness charity Shelter Cymru. Faenol Festival: Starting in 2000, Terfel started the Faenol Festival near Snowdonia in Wales. Billed as "Bryn Terfel's Faenol Festival" (often referred to as "BrynFest" or known locally in Welsh as "Gŵyl Y Faenol"), it turned into an annual music festival featuring internationally famous opera singers as well as popular Welsh artists. In the same year he released We'll Keep a Welcome - The Welsh Album, an anthology of favourite traditional songs. Lyrics I am what I am: I am what I am I am my own special creation So come take a look Give me the hook or the ovation It's my world that I want to have a little pride in My world and it's not a place I have to hide in Life's not worth a damn till you can say Hey world I am what I am I am what I am I don't want praise I don't want pity I bang my own drum Some think it's noise I think it's pretty And so what if I love each feather and each spangle Why not try and see things from a different angle Your life is a sham till you can say Hey world I am what I am I am what I am And what I am needs no excuses I deal my own deck Sometimes the ace Sometimes the deuces It's my life and there's no return and no deposit One life, so it's time to open up your closet Life's not worth a damn till you can say Hey world I am what I am (Transcribed by Roman) Lyrics We'll keep a welcome: Far away a voice is calling Bells of memory chime Come home again, come home again They call through the oceans of time We'll keep a welcome in the hillside We'll keep a welcome in the Vales This land you knew will still be singing When you come home again to Wales This land of song will keep a welcome And with a love that never fails We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth When you come home again to Wales We'll keep a welcome in the hillside We'll keep a welcome in the Vales This land you knew will still be singing When you come home again to Wales This land of song will keep a welcome And with a love that never fails We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth When you come home again to Wales We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth When you come home again to Wales

Instant rapport and a similar taste in music and direction, lead to more jamming before Nikki from Bristol and Catherine, better known as Been, from Glasgow, formed a song writing collaboration. Nikki commuted to write, gig and busk in Covent Garden. Never the Bride was born and the duo built up a core following around the capital. Their live reputation went from strength to strength and big support slots followed from The Who, ZZ TOP and The Pretenders. After successfully supporting The Who, a personal call from Roger Daltrey lead to Nikki and Been joining Daltrey, Alice Cooper, Paul Rodgers, Peter Frampton and a few more rock gods on The British Rock Symphony Tour. The band toured the UK, Europe and Australia with the Orchestra, making a huge impression with their interpretation of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir and Stairway to Heaven. Their first performance at The Royal Albert Hall is a key moment in Nikki and Beens' lives. Roger held up both their arms and said to the audience who were going crazy, "What d'ya reckon then? Nikki Lamborn has the best female rock voice since Janis Joplin and I know what I'm talking about, I knew Janis." "After The Rock Symphony Tour ended in Australia, we decided to stay awhile and write some songs," explains Been. "We did a Thelma and Louise, rented a car and drove across the country drinking tequila in small bottles. "The money had run out by the time we reached Sydney, but luckily it was around the time of The Olympics and there were lots of people to entertain. Our busking skills paid for the song-writing trip and some of those songs are on our latest album, Surprise!" Nikki's powerful presence and strong vocals has been described as Tina Turner and Robert Plant rolled into one. Her incredible voice came under the spotlight while coaching a Cambridge choir girl in the ways of rock for Channel 4's Faking It series. Been, keyboard player and occasional guitarist, is the main composer behind the songs that together with Nikki's voice, make Never the Bride unique. Other band members include Murray Gould on guitar, who has played with Elton John, Dido and Faithless, and Greg Harwood on bass, who has played with every one from Ronan Keating to James Brown. Drummer John Tonks repertoire includes Steve Winwood and the Sugarbabes. As a response to their growing fanbase worldwide, the band have recorded a DVD rockumentary, entitled For Richer For Poorer, highlighting life for a rock band on the road both at home and abroad.

Lyrics You needed me: I cried a tear You wiped it dry I was confused You cleared my mind I sold my soul You bought it back for me And held me up and gave me dignity Somehow you needed me. You gave me strength To stand alone again To face the world Out on my own again You put me high upon a pedestal So high that I could almost see eternity You needed me You needed me And I can't believe it's you I can't believe it's true I needed you and you were there And I'll never leave, why should I leave I'd be a fool 'Cause I've finally found someone who really cares You held my hand When it was cold When I was lost You took me home You gave me hope When I was at the end And turned my lies Back into truth again You even called me friend You needed me You needed me. Released on the 1976 album Love, Life And Feelings and on a single with "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" on the A-side. Available on CD on the collection Four Decades Of Song. Originally this was an Italian song called "Aria" and performed by Dario Baldan Bembo. Years later, in 1976 Mr. Acker Bilk recorded "Aria" instrumentally with his clarinet, which became a hit - in Britain it reached number five in the charts. Mr. Acker Bilk (born: Bernard Stanley Bilk) is a well known musician, a notable example is his 1962 hit "Stranger on the Shore". Norman Newell then penned English lyrics to the song for Shirley Bassey and the title became "Born To Lose". Shirley Bassey has performed this song on some live appearances and TV shows - a live recording is on Live In Japan '77. In 2000 Shirley Bassey sung it again on some concerts of her Millennium Tour, and also on the Stately Homes Tour 2001. The Italian singer Ornella Vanoni has later also sung "Aria" in English, but with different English lyrics penned by Ben Raleigh. Lyrics Born to lose: Born to lose Born to lose the game Born to cry When I hear you're near Born to smile Through a mist of tears Born to live Lost in lonely years Born to lose Every game I play You must go There's no other way Touch my life With your love once more It must last Till forever more Take my love Take my life, my soul Take my dreams Take my word, my own Would I change Could I only choose No not me I was born to lose Take my love Take my life, my soul Take my dreams Take my word, my own Would I change Could I only choose No not me I was born to lose Take my love Take my life, my soul Take my dreams Take my word, my own Would I change Could I only choose No not me I was born to lose Take my love Take my life, my soul Take my dreams Take my word, my own (Transcribed by Roman) I Am What I Am Written by Jerry Herman Released in 1984 on a single and on another version with the London Symphony Orchestra on the album I Am What I Am. Along with classic This Is My Life, Shirley Bassey sings this song at the end of almost every concert. For this reason, it is available on many collections and live recordings. It can be found live on The Birthday Concert , The Diamond Collection and on the 2003 compilation Thank you for the Years. Live performances can also be seen on the videos An Audience With Shirley Bassey, You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet and Divas Are Forever. After Shirley sings the word "ovation" in the line "give me the hook or the ovation" the audience usually breaks into applause. Lyrics I am what I am: I am what I am I am my own special creation So come take a look Give me the hook or the ovation It's my world that I want to have a little pride in My world and it's not a place I have to hide in Life's not worth a damn till you can say Hey world I am what I am I am what I am I don't want praise I don't want pity I bang my own drum Some think it's noise I think it's pretty And so what if I love each feather and each spangle Why not try and see things from a different angle Your life is a sham till you can say Hey world I am what I am I am what I am And what I am needs no excuses I deal my own deck Sometimes the ace Sometimes the deuces It's my life and there's no return and no deposit One life, so it's time to open up your closet Life's not worth a damn till you can say Hey world I am what I am (Transcribed by Roman)
